All About the OKC Boathouse District
The Boathouse District has become a go-to destination for families, athletes, adventurers and thrill seekers. Located right in the center of Oklahoma City, the district is home to several boathouses, a high-performance training center and the RIVERSPORT Adventure Center.
The Boathouse District was first established in 2006 when the Chesapeake recreational boathouse opened. The Chesapeake Boathouse, designed to mimic the look of a boat shell with oars, brought new life to rowing and activities on the Oklahoma River. Today, the district is headquarters for the USA Canoe and Kayak Federation and is a U.S Olympic and Paralympic Training center. The river has a 4,000-meter training course and a state-of-the-art finish line timing tower.
RIVERSPORT programs
RIVERSPORT has activities for just about anyone who wants to get on the Oklahoma River. Rent a kayak or paddleboard and enjoy the urban landscape on the water. If biking is your thing, rent a bike and hit the seven-mile paved trail along the river.
RIVERSPORT schools are available to anyone who is interested in trying out a new hobby. Classes offer instruction on how to row, kayak, paddleboard, canoe and more.
RIVERSPORT camps are a great way for kids to take a break from the ordinary and try something new. Week-long day camps introduce kids to rowing, paddling or sailing, and many have added adventure activities like zip lining and whitewater rafting.
Ready to flex your competitive muscles? RIVERSPORT offers a unique combination of outdoor adventure and competition with teams and leagues for ages 8 to 80. Junior crew, dragon boating, masters canoe/kayak, and the whitewater rafting league are just a few of the coached competitions it offers.
RIVERSPORT programs also include adaptive rowing opportunities, where it has partnered with INTEGRIS Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation to offer para-rowing opportunities for the visually impaired and veterans.
RIVERSPORT Adventure Center
The RIVERSPORT Adventure Center is home to Oklahoma City’s multi-million dollar whitewater rafting and kayaking park. Here you can experience class II-IV whitewater rafting and kayaking. This is the very first whitewater park in the world that offers three different water channels in the same venue.
A typical whitewater experience includes a short safety training, a raft guide, a personal floating device and oars. A conveyor belt sends you up to the top of the channel, and then your thrilling rapid adventure starts from there. You can also tube through the course or try your skills at river boarding.
The Sandridge Sky Trail
The Sand Ridge Sky Trail is another record-breaking activity offered at the Boathouse District. The Sky Trail is the tallest adventure course in the world, standing at 80 feet. This structure has several courses such as rope bridges, balance beams and much more.
Zip line across the river
This daring zip line soars 700 feet across the Oklahoma River. The zip line starts at the top of the 80-foot Sand Ridge Sky Trail and sends you through the air at 12-15 mph.
Freefall on the Rumble Drop
Catch some adrenaline with the Rumble Drop free-fall experience. This 80-foot drop is similar to the feeling of skydiving or bungee jumping without the bounce.
Slide down the High-Speed Slides and Water Slides
There are two 72-foot tall slides, the Sky Slalom and the new Sky Luge, that send you 22 mph toward the bottom of the slide. There's also a tandem 30-foot slide to try with a friend. The extreme water slides are also not to be missed.
Kid-Friendly RIVERSPORT Adventure Center activities
- Extreme jumping and climbing wall − Jump 20 feet in the air on the bungee trampolines or catch a view from the top of the climbing wall.
- Bike Pump Tracks − Mountain bike/BMX courses include a 15,000-square-foot asphalt track and a pump track designed with a series of berms, bumps and jumps.
- Hippo Slide − A water slide that shoots you down 175 feet through slippery, watery fun.
- Big Air − This inflatable launches you into the air for a freestyle splash, landing you in the inflatable landing zone.
