How to Improve Your Mental Health

31 May 2022

Posted in

May is officially Mental Health Awareness Month. With more and more people suffering from mental illness yearly, learning practices to take care of our mental health and wellness is more important than ever. Statistics show that in 2022, 14.2 million adults aged 18 and older suffered from serious mental illness. Written below, we have outlined several practices that can help you develop a healthier mind.

Prioritize Movement and Nutritious Foods

Focusing on getting enough movement throughout your day, and eating lots of nutritious food can be a total game-changer when it comes to improving your mental health and overall wellness. According to studies, eating clean, whole foods and getting a proper amount of weight-training and cardiovascular movement into your routine can reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders. To avoid feeling overwhelmed, don’t go from 0 to 100 all at once. Make small changes in your everyday routine that feel manageable, and then over time you will find that you are living a much healthier lifestyle than you had been previously.

Start a Journal

Journaling can be a very beneficial practice for those who are experiencing mental illnesses. Getting your feelings out can be very healing, and can help you sort through your emotions and make sense of them. Another form of journaling that can be greatly beneficial is gratitude journaling. Whether you choose to begin or end your day with gratitude, this can help shift your mental state into recognizing the positive things that happen in your life more often.

Try Meditating

Meditation is a useful tool for anyone who is experiencing chronic stress. Meditating allows your mind to take a break from the worries we experience on a daily basis. Even if you find five minutes during your day to listen to a guided meditation, you will find that overtime, your mental state will become more steady and peaceful. Meditating can be uncomfortable at first, but the more you stick with it the easier it becomes.
