People often refer to the term anxiety as a synonym for stress or worry. But for 6.8 million American adults, it's a constant everyday struggle.
Individuals with generalized anxiety disorder feel like they cannot stop their constant stream of worrying. Even though many individuals living with it realize that their anxiety is much more intense than the situation warrants, they are unable to stop it.
Many have difficulty relaxing and concentrating. They may startle very easily, or find it hard to fall or stay asleep.
The following are some physical symptoms that can often accompany anxiety:
- fatigue
- headaches
- muscle tension or muscle aches
- difficulty swallowing
- trembling or twitching
- irritability
- sweating
- feeling out of breath, or
- hot flashes.
