Speech Therapy

When you’re suffering from a stroke, brain injury or a neuromuscular condition, speaking and swallowing can become frustratingly difficult. Enter speech therapy.

INTEGRIS Jim Thorpe Outpatient Rehabilitation

It’s about much more than talking.

What Is Speech Therapy?

Your mouth, tongue and throat are complicated mechanisms. The fact that we’re able to direct the different parts in concert to do everything from eating and swallowing to talking and singing is amazing. But when you’re recovering from a stroke or brain injury – or struggling with the progression of a neuromuscular condition, it can all become frustratingly difficult. That’s where speech therapists (or speech-language pathologists) come in. Their expertise lies in assessing, diagnosing and treating disorders related to speech, language, cognitive-communication, voice, swallowing and fluency.

Tailoring the Therapy to You

At INTEGRIS Health, your speech therapist will develop an individualized plan of care, tailored to your needs. He or she will teach you to strengthen muscles, use compensatory strategies or might select alternative communication methods, including automated devices to help you communicate if your speech ability is severely compromised. Your speech therapist will also work carefully to educate your family and caregivers on how best to help you improve.

Patients with the following conditions may also qualify:

  • Stroke
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Motor neuron disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Huntington's disease
  • Cancer of the head, neck and throat
  • Voice problems
