There are two main types of shoulder replacement surgery: total shoulder replacement and partial shoulder replacement.

What is Total Shoulder Replacement?

Total shoulder replacement is a surgical procedure in which the ball and socket of the shoulder joint are replaced with artificial components called a prosthesis. The goal of the surgery is to relieve pain and improve function in the shoulder. Total shoulder replacement is typically recommended for individuals who have severe shoulder pain and limited mobility due to conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or a shoulder injury that has not responded to other treatments, such as physical therapy or non-surgical management.

During the surgery, the surgeon will make an incision in the front of the shoulder and remove the damaged bone and cartilage. The artificial components are then carefully positioned in the shoulder joint, and the incision is closed with sutures or staples. Total shoulder replacement surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia and takes two to three hours to complete.

What is Partial Shoulder Replacement?

Partial shoulder replacement is a surgical procedure in which only the ball of the shoulder joint is replaced with an artificial component, called a prosthesis. The goal of the surgery is to relieve pain and improve function in the shoulder. Partial shoulder replacement is typically recommended for individuals who have severe shoulder pain and limited mobility due to conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or a shoulder injury that has not responded to other treatments, such as physical therapy or non-surgical management.

During the surgery, the surgeon will make an incision in the front of the shoulder and remove the damaged bone and cartilage in the ball of the joint. The artificial component is then carefully positioned in the shoulder joint, and the incision is closed with sutures or staples. Partial shoulder replacement surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia and takes two to three hours to complete.

After Shoulder Replacement Surgery

After the surgery, physical therapy is an important part of the recovery process to help you regain strength, mobility, and function in the shoulder. Most people are able to return to their normal activities within three to six months after total shoulder replacement surgery, although the exact timeline will depend on your individual circumstances.
