Bypass Surgery

Your coronary arteries supply blood to your heart muscle. When they become blocked or narrowed due to atherosclerosis or coronary artery disease, Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery or bypass surgery is used to restore blood flow to your heart. This surgical procedure is done by using a section of a vein from the leg or arteries from the chest to go around (bypass) the diseased section of a coronary artery. The healthy new vein or artery creates a new route for blood to flow to the heart muscle, giving it oxygen-rich blood.

During bypass surgery, your chest is opened (referred to as open-chest surgery). The heart is stopped, allowing surgeons to perform the bypass on the heart while you are placed on a heart-lung machine. This machine temporarily sustains life as it circulates the vital blood and oxygen to all parts of the body. Surgeons may perform a single, double, triple or quadruple bypass depending on the number of blocked coronary arteries.

Other names for this surgery are:

  • Coronary artery bypass grafting
  • CABG – pronounced "cabbage"
  • Coronary artery bypass graft surgery
  • Heart bypass surgery

Imaging and Tests Before Surgery

Before you undergo bypass surgery, your doctor will request several tests to be done to determine if bypass surgery is safe to do.

These tests can include the following:

Conditions That Coronary Bypass Surgery Treat

Coronary bypass surgery is generally used to treat coronary artery disease. This includes conditions such as heart attack, angina pectoris, and silent myocardial ischemia. These diseases involve the narrowing of the arteries in your heart because of a buildup of fatty wax-like reside called plaque.

Why is Bypass Surgery Done

Your doctor may recommend a bypass surgery to treat a blocked or narrow coronary artery. This will be done to restore the blood supply to their heart muscle.

  • Blockage in the left main heart artery
  • Severe narrowing of the main heart artery
  • Severe chest pain caused by multiple heart arteries narrowing
  • More than one diseased heart arteries
  • Lower left heart chamber doesn't work as well
  • Blocked heart artery that can't be treated with coronary angioplasty
  • An angioplasty with or without a stint that hasn't worked.

Double Bypass Surgery

Double bypass surgery is a form of open-heart surgery that redirects the blood around two partially or fully blocked arteries in the heart.

The procedure is called a "double bypass" because two coronary arteries need to be bypassed.
