Beyond the Burn

A severe burn can be a seriously devastating injury – both physically and emotionally. If you’ve suffered a severe burn, you may be left with physical challenges like a loss of certain physical capabilities, disfigurement, scarring or limb loss. But you also may be facing the emotional and psychological injuries that come with severe burns, like, nightmares or flashbacks from the traumatizing event or maybe loss of a friend or family member in the fire.

Burn Degrees - Not always a Matter of Heat

Burns are traumatic injuries caused by different kinds of energy that cause specific burn wounds: thermal (extreme heat or cold), electrical or chemical energy. They are classified by degree, depending on how deep the burn has penetrated and how severe the damage is.

• First-Degree (superficial partial thickness) Burns: Affect only outer layer of skin and will heal without treatment. The burn site is pink or red in appearance, sore and tender, but not blistered. Example: mild sunburn.
• Second-Degree (partial thickness) Burns: Involve the epidermis and part of the dermis layer of skin. Skin is a blistered, reddened and swollen with a weeping wet surface  and is sensitive to air. Unless it is a deep second degree burn, the wound will heal by itself. Example: a flash fire or hot liquid splashed on skin.
• Third-Degree (full thickness) Burns: Destroy the epidermis and dermis. The burn site appears white, black or charred with a leather-like appearance. While the site will be swollen, there is no sensation in the area since the nerve endings are destroyed. The full thickness of the skin has been burned and there may also be destruction of the underlying tissue, bones, muscles, and tendons. Regeneration of skin is not possible in third-degree burns and these areas must be grafted. Example: flame, electricity, chemicals, frostbite.
