You may be confused on how to structure a proper workout routine. Should you workout the same muscle groups repeatedly throughout the week or mix it up? Chris Wolff, a certified personal trainer with INTEGRIS PACER Fitness Center, explains how to build a proper workout routine and why you need to allow your body adequate rest between workouts.

Hi. My name is Chris Wolff. I'm a certified personal trainer at INTEGRIS PACER Fitness Center. Today I'm going to talk to you about structuring a program, as well as allowing proper rest in between workouts.

You may have some confusion on whether or not to work out the same muscle group repeatedly throughout the week. I'm here to tell you, you need to allow your body proper rest.

As you're working out, for an example, if you're performing a chest work out or a chest day work out, you need to allow a minimum of two days of rest in between another chest day work out.

The reason behind this is you're actually causing micro trauma to your muscles. Micro trauma are small tears in your muscle fibers. What this is doing is building your muscles up by getting nutrients to those micro tears and helping build that muscle stronger.

So if you perform a chest work out on a Monday, Tuesday perform a leg work out, Wednesday rest, and so forth.

Before beginning any exercise program, please consult your physician.
