They say the backbone of any organization is its leadership. And the leadership of Canadian Valley Hospital not only consists of corporate management, administration, directors, supervisors, and employees, it consists of community volunteers.

A vital piece to the success of Canadian Valley Hospital is building a strong and loyal volunteer auxiliary. Several community members have already taken a leadership role by becoming a part of the Canadian Valley Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary. Currently, volunteers dedicate a 4-hour daily shift each week to provide assistance at the Information Desk, Gift Gallery, Pastoral Care, Inpatient Services, Radiology Services, Emergency Services, and several office/clerical positions. As the hospital continues to grow, and patient care services expand, the need for volunteers will increase as well.

The time volunteers donate to this facility is not measured in dollars, it is measured on the cheerful greetings and friendly smiles that patients see when they first enter our doors. There is no monetary value in what our volunteers bring in terms of making our patients and their families feel more comfortable in the health care setting.

Over the past two decades we have seen a growing body of research that indicates volunteering provides individual health benefits in addition to social ones. This research, which is presented by CNCS (Corporation for National and Community Service), in a report titled "The Health Benefits of Volunteering..." has established a strong relationship between volunteering and health. Those who volunteer have lower mortality rates, greater functional ability, and lower rates of depression later in life than those who do not volunteer. But don't take our word for it... join us and see for yourself!
